Uncovering the Uwharries

What does it take to stay with the same company for 20 years? For Chasity Morris it’s coworkers who feel like family and a work environment you love. That’s exactly what she found nearly two decades ago when she started working at Mohawk Industries. Mohawk Industries is the world’s largest flooring company and their Mt. Gilead facility focuses on their wood and laminate manufacturing operations.

“Mohawk is a wonderful place to work and you don’t find that kind of chemistry anywhere else. I’ve been here 20 years. That kind of longevity is very common here and I think that speaks volumes,” Chasity said.

After several years she briefly left Mohawk for another job and quickly returned, having a whole new appreciation for the type of work environment they foster. She started working at Mohawk straight out of college. Her professor at Pfeiffer University actually recommended her for the job.

And while Chasity loves the consistency of her work life, on the weekends you will find her hopping from one adventure to the next. The Uwharrie National Forest provides the perfect place for her many outdoor excursions.

“I love hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, horseback riding, 4 wheeling or 3 wheeling. There are unlimited things to do in this area that I enjoy,” Chasity said. She also participates in a 4-day event where she hikes a 40-mile backpacking trail with Three Rivers Land Trust that leads all the way to Asheboro.

Chasity is also a member of the Tarheel State Hangers, who hang in hammocks at Yates Place campground at least once a year. “Everyone goes and you have a competition for who has the coolest lights on their hammock or who can make a fire the quickest,” Chasity explains.

The Uwharries is like a well-kept secret that people are just now finding out about. I used to be able to go out and have the whole trail to myself—now it’s a different story, but it’s still amazing,” Chasity said. “Most people think woods are woods wherever you are but when I went out west I got so home sick for the trails back home.”

For Chasity, Montgomery county is the perfect place to call home where she can stay with the Mohawk family and the next adventure is always just around the corner.

There are unlimited things to do in the Triad that I enjoy.
