Hometown Community Calling
Greensboro, N.C. is the common thread in Hilda Tajalli’s life. Born and raised in Greensboro, Hilda returned home after living in Washington, DC post-graduation from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
“In D.C., my job focused on corporate culture and engagement. It made me think a lot about what community means and why it’s so important,” she said. “I remembered Greensboro as the community that raised me into who I am today.”
Hilda did something considered bold by her peers. After a little over two years in D.C., she packed up and returned to Greensboro with no set plans. Fortunately, she could lean on her community spirit. Her work with nonprofit organizations, such as National Conference for Community and Justice that focuses on human relations, offered a welcoming re-entry and reconnection to her hometown.
“As a young professional, I’m able to make a greater impact in Greensboro than I ever could have in D.C.,” said Hilda, pointing out the city’s vast and accessible network of mentors. “It’s very easy to network here.”
Today, Hilda works in the Commercial Real Estate Industry with Tanger Outlets – headquartered in Greensboro.
Hilda funnels her energy back into Greensboro’s community by volunteering her time on synerG’s Counsel, Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro Future Fund’s Executive Committee.
“My friends say I’m the queen of being overly-involved,” joked Hilda. “But these organizations have shown me that there is a sense of belonging by simply being who you are, and that collaboration is always better than competition.”
One competitive edge she doesn’t mind is Greensboro’s cost of living. Housing costs are much more affordable than in D.C., and she enjoys many of the area’s community events with her fiancé Nino.
Greensboro has a real sense of community. You want to know your neighbors, and even when you go to the grocery store, you’ll know three or four people.
